Escherichia coli (a.k.a E.coli) is a gram negative rod. It is catagorized as a coliform. It is a common commensal in the intestines. There are different subspecies. There is the good E. coli that keeps us healthy. There is E. coli H 0157, (an Enteroinvasive form) the really nasty one that can kill you. That E. coli is the one that grows on Maconkey's agar with sorbitol, for it won't utilize lactose like regular E.coli.

Given a chance, E. coli causes some nasty UTI's if it makes it way to the urinary system. Oftentimes some folks get "Montezuma's Revenge" when traveling to places like tropical countries. This is why bottled water is your friend when you travel.
