I want a BIG, BIG dog.... like Great Dane big, but I can't deal with a dog that needs to be walked 3 times a day, especially living in downtown Lexington in a loft and trying to get my degree. I want a big dog, but not a dog that'll make my neighbors hate me. I was thinking a Vizsla, or a King Charles Spaniel, or a Border Collie. My family's had Brittanys for years, and I want to keep a dog that smart, but not a Brittany. I want a really smart herding or sporting dog. Any ideas?

As a med student, you should be smart enough to know that to have a pet would mean dedication, time, money, etc. It wouldn't be fair to the pet as you, I'm sure, are busy with studies and school and a social life. Wait till you have graduated and internships are through, when you have more time. In the meantime, get a virtual pet, if you end up not having time to take care of it, at least it's not real.

Well, you are not in a situation to provide properly for a Border Collie. You would find that your home and belongings would be destroyed when the dog gets bored due to lack of activity. They are great dogs, but you MUST have the time to spend with them.

Honestly, being tied up with a lot of schooling means that it's probably not the best time to bring a dog into your life. It wouldn't really be fair to the dog, you know? I had a rescue recently inform me that very high number of dogs that end up in shelter and rescue are from military personel (who move and can't take the dog) and college students (who get a dog only to realize they really don't have the time for one). I'm not saying you'd be a bad owner, just not sure if you really have the time for a dog right now.

Um, and not all cats have bad attitudes. Ragamuffins are like dogs trapped in a cats body! I swear! They are really great pets. And they don't need the same constant care that a dog or puppy would need.

I don't think that a vizsla or a border collie is a good idea... think about it, a big dog, but not a big house... and you can't walk it too much... geez, the dog is so going to wreck the house in that scenario....and I'm not even as old as you and even I know that much.... MAJOR RULE : ALL big dogs need to be walked often (like once a day but a real long walk or split up into many short walks), if u can't walk dogs too often forget about herding or sporting dogs... those dogs only mean one thing.... WALK!!! EXCERSISE!!!! AND VERY OFTEN OR FOR AGES AND AGES!!!, so try something a little less energetic; like terriers, some utility breeds, toy dogs (though I doubt you'd want that...).
Cause with your criteria, there is NO dog like that...
well good luck with your med exam when it comes and I hope my hints helped...

You should not have a dog right now. You don't have the time and won't for a while so that wouldn't be fair to the dog. Any dog needs to be walked 3 times a day. You are being selfish wanting a dog. You need to wait until you are done w/ school and then interning. There is no way you could possibly be there enough for a dog. If you want a pet get a cat. They can take care of themselves and don't mind being left alone for long periods of time.

smart herding or sporting dogs, they have to be walked too. It is not the dog that will make the neighbors hate you, it would be you. Trained dogs usually do not bother the neighbors, the ones that are not trained do. where is your dog going to pee and poop at if you do not take him outside three times a dog. I have never hear of a dog that is born peeless and poopless, they all gotta go. Maybe right now, until you are finish with your schooling, you just need to be a big,big stuff Dog, they never need to use the bathroom.

I agree with everyone else here. Please do not get a dog right now. Especially a herding or sporting dog breed. They need a lot of exercise. All dogs need exercise and your time though. You don't really have any. Get your dog fill by hanging out at a Pet store, like Petsmart or going to a dog park and playing with other dogs. Wait till your done with school and wait till you have time to give the dog proper exercise and attention. I am a trainer and one of my pet peeves are people who get dogs and don't have time for them. That poor dog suffers from hardly any affection and then when it's hyper from being cooped up all day, the owner gets upset and ends up giving it to the pound. Like everyone else has said, get a stuffed animal or even one of those robot dogs for now. ; )

You need a stuffed dog.

You will be way too busy for a real one. Wait until you have that big house in Weston, and then you can get the Great Dane. They shelters are filled with dogs of people who just didn't have the time for them.

As an owner of a Saint Bernard, large dogs are generally not intelligent...but they are sweet...which is much more important!

I have 2 border collies, you DO NOT WANT one. I love mine but they're NOT meant to live inside with nothing to do all day. They are very intelligent but to be happy they need to work, be around other dogs and have plenty of attention payed to them. They have boundless energy and will be so very unhappy if they're left alone. I guarantee that while you're gone he will find something to do and you probably won't like it. He will drive you and your neighbors CRAZY. Be a kind dog owner, and wait until you're out of med school and finish your residency before you get a dog. You and your dog will be much happier for it.

I agree with the others. The question should be "what kind of a med student is good for a dog" - and not vica versa. Wait till you have finished your studies and till you have a garden. Studying and living in a loft does not sound great for ANY dog.

No dog would be good right now..... If you dont have the time to let him out to go potty, 3 times a day then.... he is going too poop and pee all over your loft, unless he is a outside dog.. and you have some property and he can roan around in.. Big dogs need to run alot.. and then do eat, drink, poop and pee alot!!!!
