Take what feels like it would suit your personality. Although even without martial arts training, I think you would still protect your family no matter what. Remember you evolved from an animal and when your family is threatened you would revert a few million years back and become a beast.
But to tame that beast and give it some tricks... try picking a martial art that is matching to your personality. I myself and not a striker. I can if need be, but I prefer to wrestle, lock and throw. I chose Aikdo because it is a great art. Very subtle, I like the throws, the locks and the weapons practice. I tried boxing once, but I couldnt bring myself to hit someone hard in the face, to that I need to be super angry... so anyways. Choose what you feel is right, sit in a few classes and get a feel for the teacher and the students. Take care

Just visit some training areas around, sit in, participate in some classes before deciding. The style is not necessarily all that important if you ahvea good teacher. A good teacher will make anything practical and useful, and can prepare you for what you may face. You really can learn good basics quickly, but it's important to work hard. For self defense, drilling basic moves over and over is probably a good choice, instead of flashy stuff. This commits them to muscle memory, making them easy reactions.
For taking care of your family, learn some weapon fighting. Real fights are not fair very often. Ask teachers to do some self defense stuff, and be clear about your goals.
Everyone has different reasons for joining up, self-defense is a good goal.
Good luck!

You can't learn to street fight. Street fighting has no rules, so you can pretty much do whatever you want. Carry a baseball bat or a tazer gun. Most of us don't live in the world of Grand Theft Auto, so we don't have to defend ourselves on a daily basis. If your neighborhood is that unsafe, then you should try to find ways to move away from there. Maybe you could move to another state where the cost of living is much lower and you get more for your money.
Seriously, people don't learn martial arts to learn how to fight. It used to be that way before we became a civilized society, but it's not that way today. It's like any other ART. People who love to paint or draw can take art classes to enhance the skills or passion that they already have. It would be like saying 'I see these paintings selling for millions of dollars and I want to make a lot of money, but I don't want to spend years taking art classes.'
If your family is truly important to you, you will do the right thing, not necessarily the easiest thing. Don't take shortcuts.

Unlike what some people seem to think about people who practice TKD there area many of us whom understand that every martial art has its benefits. The gym that I go to we have quite a bit of self defense included in our style. It is helpful however the main focus on the self defense is get away not punish your attacker.
You said this is to protect your wife and children you will probably want something that is effective and vicious and will also give out an obvious warning that you mean business. I would probably recommend Krav Maga.
Krav Maga is the official self defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, and has been taught to hundreds of law enforcement agencies and thousands of civilians
in the United States.
Krav Maga is a simple, effective self defense system that emphasizes instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios.
If you want something effective that is easy to learn I would try this if you can find a training center in your area.

Hey don't listen to the TKD tards, they have never been in a fight that doesn't count points-
as far as being the most effective
Thia boxing for striking
Greco roman wrestling for takedowns or Judo
and brazilian jui jitsu for the ground
Actually see for your self, go rent any UFC or pride dvd and see what is the most effective, rent some early UFC and that will tell you alot about what the average guy on the street is gonna come at you with= not much
so on that note, train hard, fight harder
it takes awhile to develope these skills and you will go through alot of heart ache and pain to achieve your goals
good luck

Sorry, it doesn't work the way you describe it. While by learning some basics you can boost your confidence it won't help you in a real fight. To be able to stand your ground you need to spend a fair amount of time practicing. As for the style it doesn't really matter, with practice comes understanding and proficiency, you start to see where styles cross over. Judo and some punching would be probably the best mix in a short run and with the list effort

Seriously, a firearm course. I'm a muay thai fighter, I've wrestled and boxed. However if I move in and live with my girl and have child, I would perfer to rely on firearm instead of my hands to hands combat skill.
Take a course or you may end up kill your own family because you were too tigger happy.
Beside that most fight that happen between someone and a family usually happen in home. It's extremely rare for someone to randomly attack a person with family. So if anyone break into your house, you better assume they're armed with some kind of weapons at least.

Jeet kune Do-"The Way of The Intercepting Fist." It was created by Bruce Lee in July of 1967. JKD-is "The Scientific Approach to Street Self-Defense." JKD is simple, direct, efficient and economical.
You should devote yourself Daily to grow as a Human-Being. No matter how long it takes. There is no easy way around it. There are no Belt Rankings in JKD. If your not in good shape, how can one defend themselves in any system of Martial Arts.

well, i see you're not really into it but i'd suggest kung-fu, probably an ancient technique(there are lots of types of kung-fu).
I'm learning hung-gar and I used to be chubby and slow but now i'm just a big girl who can move real fast and can defend myself when needed(by proofs).
I'm not saying that magic will happen if you start kung-fu, magic doesn't happen in martial arts, but having some experience of other martial arts before I know that first comes energy, strength and reflex and way later the tactics and the moves to put down a guy.
Anyway, try a few schools(of different types of martial arts) before deciding and choose the one with the worst looks, they usually do the things you want to learn ;) i chose that way too...
BTW, age doesn't matter in martial arts (at least the kung-fu-karate-kind of type). I'm 21 and I've seen a 13 yr old skinny girl (3yrs experience in martial arts) win in a full contact fight a 29 yr old guy nearly twice her size...
take care..

Dont listen to guys like, Dizz and timberrattler818.
aikido sucks big sweaty balls.
I think their steven seagal fans, or somthing like that.
aikido, Might work in the movies. but it will never work in real life. You will waste your life mastering a useless art.
All these aikido guys say that aikido works, yet there isnt ever any hard proof. Why is an art that supposebly works, never seen proven in real life.
Aikido is like, Bigfoot. its stupid and fake.
They also have live demontrations were they run into each other like idiots. No one fights like that. Its so staged. if i ever saw an aikido demonstration done live, i will run into the stage and spare the, Master. And be like,"what know bi*ch, Cant handle this."
u can go on youtube.com and watch them run into each other. just type in, aikido, and search.
learn something thats tested and proven to work. Like BJJ or Muay thai. or both.
