If you don't have a fenced in yard (preferably with a kennel inside that yard, if you don't keep your dog in the house with you), you shouldn't have a Siberian.
This breed RUNS. It's what they do. He shouldn't be sitting on a chain in your backyard in the first place, but when he's off the chain, he will run. And if it keeps happening, he will be killed by a car.
Quoting directly from the Siberian Husky Club of America's website (a good place to research the breed *before* you get one):
"There is one final characteristic of the Siberian Husky which we must point out -- their desire to RUN. There are many breeds of dogs which, when let out in the morning, will sit in the front yard all day. Not the Siberian Husky. His heritage has endowed him with the desire to run and his conformation has given him the ability to enjoy it effortlessly. But, one quick lope across a busy street could be the last run that he enjoys, ever. Because of this, we strongly urge that no Siberian Husky ever be allowed unrestrained freedom. Instead, for his own protection, he should be confined or under control at all times. Sufficient exercise for proper development and well-being may be obtained on a leash, in a large enclosure, or best of all, in harness. If you feel that it is inconvenient or cruel to keep a dog thus confined, then the Siberian Husky is not the breed for you."
I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I have owned and rescued this breed for 20 years, and these are the facts.
You need to fence in your yard, or find him a home where he will be safe. It's just that simple.

Danielle, Sibes are notorious escape artists. They were bred for long distance running and when they are confined to a small yard with no organized exercise they will do anything they can to escape.
You absolutely need to do two things:
1. Secure that dog!! Try an escape proof kennel (heavy duty chain link, escape proof latch on concrete) if he MUST be outside or get a crate and housetrain him, then keep him indoors.
2. Get him some regular exercise. That means learn how to rollerblade with him or ride a bike with him and run him at least 5 times a week.
Huskies are beautiful dogs but people should really research breeds and carefully consider their problems before buying. I love huskies, but I would never consider owning one because anything less than what I've described, in my opinion, is cruel for that type of dog.

Is there any way that you could build a fence around your property? If you can't do that think about putting up an invisible fence. That might be questionable if your dog is pretty old, because it might be hard to train him to understand the invisible fence if he's older. Other than that I don't know what else you could do. Good luck! :)

I love siberian huskies, they are beautiful dogs. Best thing to do is built a fence to keep him in. It is well worth the life of your dog. If he is use to being chained, he should do fine inside a fence.

Double chain him. Have a chain and a leather leash too. You might want to invest in one of those fence things that they have on their collar. True it is a little cruel and unpleasant, but better than being hit by a car.
