Tonight I added some bleach to sections in my hair but they haven't gone blonde, more red/ginger and it looks brassy. Must have taken it off too soon or something.

Anyway I just want to get rid and make it so its all the same colour but thats dark brown. Will my hair go green? Whats the best thing to do? Not sure if i can get a salon to see me in time with it being xmas! :S

I just want to add that I didn't use household bleach! lol! I used professional bleaching kit, anyway I am going to put brown over it as advised by two separate stylists as it isn't blonde as i said it is ginger/orange/brassy. It doesn't need repigmentation, it doesn't need stripping and it doesn't need a fortune spending at a salon as some hairdressers would have you believe. This is only in my case, my hair isn't damaged so can take it. Thanks to all who gave sensible answers and didn't critisise, i have been dying my own hair for 15 years and never damaged my hair badly and it has never gone wrong until yesterday!

yep a box colour of brown will do the job. make sure you dont use any henna products on the blonde, shampoos conditioners etc. or you will go green. id recommend a semi- perm colour to minimise the damage. your hair will be very dry after the bleach so use a good conditioner or leave the one you get with the colour in overnight

When changing hair colour you have to consult the colour spectrum. To go from dark brown to blond you needed to bleach past the brown to red brown, then through red to orange, orange to yellow then finally blond. You took the bleach off too early and stopped at the red/orange stage. Now you can either put the bleach back on again and finish the process (but keep an eye on the condition of your hair because you don't want the ends to turn to jelly by over processing) or put a red brown over the top and go back to brown. It's a simple equation to remember, Blond + brown = green if you don't replace the red in the colour spectrum. You could also try putting a purple toner over the streaks because purple cancels out orange and this will get rid of some of the brassiness without bleaching. If I were you I would persevere with the streaks because the damage from the bleach has already been done and you sound like you wanted a bit of a change. Hair usually looks better with a bit of texture from hi-lights and low-lights so run with it until you want to change back!

With dark brown hair bleach will take the hair through processes removing the pigment until it becomes blonde. The reason I suspect that it has turned a brassy red/orange colour is that the bleach was not strong enough to "lift" the colour or indeed the development time was insufficient.

To return back to brown you need to replace the pigment that you have taken out of the hair. You need to put a red dye on, and then then brown or else it will be an ashy green colour

I had this problem, i had dark brown hair, and tried blonde streaks, and it went orange/ginger! =( it was on my birthday as well so i had 2 go out looking like that! Anyway, how i fixed it was gettin a light/medium brown hair dye, not dark brown, and applied that to it. The orange streaks were then brown, and the next time i put bleach on streaks, they went blonde. I streaked mine once more , but only because i wanted it blonder than it had actually gone, depends on how blonde you want it.

Some people's hair naturally has red in it, even if it doesn't seem like it, both mine and my mums do, and so if we try to dye it over too many steps (i.e dark brown to blonde) it will go a reddy-gingery colour. What i have to do, is dye it a lighter brown colour, and then it will go blonde. So i would advise you dye the ginger bits a light brown colour, and then streak it blonde again.

That person up there ^^^ said put a red based dye on... DO NOT do this, unless you want the streaks to be ginger. trust me, i know, red hair+blonde bleach = ginger hair!!

And i never go to the hairdressers to do have mine done, it's just too expensive!! It's a lot cheaper out of a bottle, and since my first bad experience, as long as it's a light enough colour, it will go blonde, not ginger/red!
Good Luck!

if you get a dark brown dye and put it all over then it wont go gree, but after a couple of weeks it will fade a bit but only a little and go a lighter brown than reast of your hair.
You could bleach again to get rid of the orangy bit, you see hair goes through stages when being bleached , brown, red , orangy/pink then blonde/white so you just have too keep you eye on it when you are bleaching it , also if one section of hair turns blonde before the other put conditioner on that part to stop it developing any more x

You didn't keep it on long enough, but you shouldn't leave it on for more than an hour. Results could be that your hair will look fried or it will fall out.

When you're using bleach I would recommend going to a stylist. Being a stylist myself, I've heard too many horror stories. It may cost more but you will end up happy and with your hair looking great, So don't fret and go see a stylist tomorrow !

before dying your hair back brown put a wash in wash out on it or a semi-perminant thats like the colour you want to go if not a little lighter than the color then put your perminant dye on once you have dried it because your hair will already be darkened and not light it will take better like dying it from brown to blonde you need to put a pre-lightener on first so your hair is not that dark then the blonde will take good luck

Babe you you should use a pre-lightener before you go to light from dark. Dash to the chemist or store in the morning and do it with PRE-LIGHTENER , I know this love because I tried to go from black to blonde and my hair turned a bright red lol, Oh babe I do sympathise it is hard when you do this but us women are very vain when it comes to our hair. By the way did you mean bleach as in bleach you would use for cleaning etc.. or a product you bought for hair ? Get in touch with me at pauline.neild@btinternet.com and I can talk to you more about it.

what i would do before you dye it is to do a test piece first. take a few strands of the hair that has gone wrong and dye them to see how they turn out. this can be expensive you have wasted a whole dye but at such short notice it may be difficult to get it professionally done. if in doubt i am sure that a hair salon would give you some good advice if you ask them

Use a dark reddish brown tint if you want it all back to brown. If you want to keep the highlights in then use ash blond semi permanent color to counteract the red tones. Semi permanent ash blond tint will not affect the brown and it will make the brassy color a more sandy tone
