The quick answer to your question is, "you don't, that's why it's called gambling." You may , however, increase your possibility of success of picking winners by handicapping. There are many variables to consider. There are tons of books available on handicapping ; get one and read it.

You can't. But you can make a good guess by looking at the past performances of all the horses that are running. I look at what the record of each horse in the race is and how they have done in races at the same or similar length and on the running surface (dirt or turf). I also pay close attention to what speeds the different horses have been timed at and what class of competition they are each used to facing. If a horse that usually runs in expensive races is running today in a cheaper one, I tend to think he has a good shot even if his other numbers aren't impressive. My advice is to read a good handicapping book just to get the basics; I always recommend Sam Lewin's education of a Horseplayer, which is a classic, but I recently read the Dummies book (Betting on Horse Racing For Dummies) by Richard Eng and was surprised by how good it was.

I don't bet the Thoroughbred horses, because there are just to many variables such as jokey, weight, track condition, distance etc. It is just to complicated to end up a winner.

I bet the harness races, and I can pretty much narrow my winnings down to 2 - 3 horses based on the 6 things:
1) Driver record
2) Class
3) Pace
4) Time (last 6 races)
5) Trainer record
6) Money earned

I try to keep it simple.

There is also a Jockey on top. You may have to ask him in some types of races especially where the price money is small.
