I'll bet there are fewer atheists in Iraq than other military folks in the states!

Well, there were more than I thought. When I was in basic you either went to Church on sunday morning or cleaned the barracks. Usually about a dozen of us stayed behind. Not all claimed to be atheists, but most said they were. Later, on, I was rarely in a unit that didn't have at least a couple of atheists. And there are many agnostics, and others who just don't say anything about the topic.

So all in all my guesstimate would be maybe 4-6% are atheists. If you include agnostics, maybe as many as 7-9 percent.

Enough that there's actually a group ( I think they're called the Atheists in Foxholes or something like that). I've recently hear a chaplan say there are more atheists in the military than in the civian populace.

I'm sure there are atheists in the Army, but it's amazing the people who find faith when faced with war, time away from family, etc. Most troops I've met during my time in service were of one faith or another.

I wouldn't say "a lot", but I have never seen any study done on this topic. I would say most consider them self some form of Christian, whether they are actually going to church or practicing it in any way.

Probably. After seeing all the hell and misery in the world, the excessive misery, the lack of an help from any deity--I imagine it get's hard to hold onto any belief in a "god" after all that.
