Why did Jesus say, "I am the Bread of LIfe"? Why didn't He say, "I'm your meat and potatoes" which is considered to be the "main dish"?
In other words, what is the significance of "bread"?

My question came about because I was baking bread for Christmas presents and I wanted to connect it to how Jesus gave bread. It was an important event and I wanted the gift to be more meaningful than just a fresh loaf of bread.

When Jesus Christ said "I am the Bread of Life" He is not referring to the literal food we must always remember that Christ speak in parable and why He use bread simple because He is talking to the Israelites and bread is the table food on that time. The significance of bread is life.

Yeshua Messiah/JC [pbuh] was a Master Communicator and the Greatest Teacher who knew how to speak in parables, double-entendres, and symbolisms.

'Bread' as in 'Food', also means 'Knowledge'...

Peace be with you.

Potatos weren't domesticated by that time....and besides, why make a complex message like that so cluttered up? Why wouldn't he have said, "I'm your Fish and Wine?"

Besides, he might not have said that at all. Whomever King James got to translate and reiterate the original scrolls could have taken some creative license. It may have said..."I'm your huckleberry."
