I'm assuming you need to scan files you got from someone's Windows PC and which will end up on another one. (Otherwise, a virus scanner is a waste of system resources, as your computer is already incapable of being infected by a virus.)
ClamXav (http://www.clamxav.com/) is one good choice. It's open source and completely free. I'm pretty sure there are others, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.
I realize you already specified "free", but try to stay away from Symantec products. I've heard nothing but horror stories about them, and while they don't do any good for your Mac, they may actually do some harm.

I would also recommand Download.com but most of the software on that site are only free trials and I don't think you want those. You can go to torrent sites (www.torrenportal.com , www.torrentspy.com , etc.) and download programs that provide the key so you can register it for free. All you need to do is install a program that downloads torrents (www.morpheus.com or www.utorrent.com) then go to any torrent site, search for the program, and if advaible download it and you got the program :).
