Make it personal--something you know they like or are interested in. Those are the best kinds. If it is for a person you don't know well, like a name drawing type of thing, just do your best and maybe go with a gift certificate.

Depends. If it's a non-romantic thing, something like a gift certificate or some cookies. If it's an office romance you want to start, then something suggestive, like chocolates, a CD of a group they like or even a picture of yourself.
