I believe that animal abuse as a child is supposed to be an indicator of antisocial behavior later in life, according to what I saw on CourtTV. In addition to growing up in troubled homes, a lot of violent offenders have anmial abuse as a common denominator as well according to the show.

I believe it should be prosecuted seriously and make sure the person gets a criminal record and is watched.

In my state it's a misdemeanor..a small fine and losing the right to own the dog..In some states it's a felony. I think it should be a felony EVERY where.. abusing animals is just the start..then it moves to child abuse, spousal abuse, murder, etc. I will stand up for any and all animals that are abused...

Not much of one! A couple of city utility workers in my town found a trapped cat in a dumpster on duty and somebody saw them kill it. They got paid suspension and community service hours, big deal! They should have gotten more than that!
