With very similar question he was asked once, and the best answer is the one he gave by himself!
But, the truth is that he was born in village Smiljan near town Gospic in Croatia that was the part of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy at the time. As well, the truth is that his father was Serbian origin and orthodox priest. Also, he finished elementary school and gymnasium in Croatia. After 2 years pause because of illness (cholera) he went as first to Technical University in Graz (Austria) where he was studying technical science. After it he continued his technical studying in Prague (Czech Republic).
Between 1941 and 1943 (before he died), during II World War, when under the fascist regime two ethnically extremist oriented Serbs (Cetniks) and Croats (Ustase) were fighting against each other in internecine war, Nikola Tesla was asked the very similar question.
As the great humanist as he was, he didn't let the asker to involve him in political darkness or his answer to be the inspiration for future hate of any side. Therefore his answer was:
"I equally love my Serbian people as my Croatia homeland!"
So, you may translate this by saying that Nicola Tesla was Serb from Croatia or Croatian Serb – it's your choice. Personally I wouldn't stick to any as I find his answer much better, wider, and more human and open minded, that any of these definitions could be!
