Exercise is the key. I have problems w/ anxiety/panic attacks from time to time and a good cardio workout is the only thing that helped me sleep like a baby again. the attacks also decreased too.
You need to exercise about 4-5 times a week. Get a physical first.

Go back to those times whenever a change occurred in your life. Did they really turn out as bad as you thought or worse? Or nothing really warranting being overly burdened about, which is the invisible stress under the event/ocassion/turning point? Is there a pattern? Or are you overreacting? What is really within your means/ability to 'control'? what is not?
If you sit down and consider some of these questions, you may relieve some of your subconscious fears. I'm not saying this will solve all problems. It just might allow you to sleep restfully, what you really need to think with clarity each day.
Christmas isn't just an event. Celebrate the concept of being 'born', whenever, wherever. Trust mindfully.

Don't use pills! Any variation of sleeping pills might work for about a half a year-a year, but by then, you will become dependant on them and reverse your body's clock.
I know kids who've gotten addicted to sleeping pills, and cannot sleep on their own.
Try to solve your problems. If not, always look on the bright side. Lie to yourself, even if you don't want to.
Whatever works is good. Just no pills.

DON'T USE PILLS!!!!
Try deep breathing exercisese like those associated with meditation. It helps you relax and deal with stress not only while you're sleeping but through-out your day. I have problems with anxiety and meditation is the only thing that has helped me. I now also exercise and sleep like a baby.

I tend to turn out all the lights in my room, stare at a clock, and do some breathing exercises.
Try holding your breath for a minute, staring at the clock.
Then go for two, three, maybe even four minutes.
After a few tries you should feel at least somewhat relaxed.
Hope this helps.
