You can get all of those at a bank. A travelers check are a bit more secure than cash. You keep track of the serial numbers, and you sign them all once. When you cash them, you sign it a second time, and along with ID so it makes it more difficult for someone else to pass them off as their own. They use to be more popular in the past, but now with more credit cards and bank machines, there are other ways of getting around without carrying a lot of money besides that. Hotels are usually pretty good at cashing travelers checks.

Money orders or certified checks, are another way that a bank guarantees payment. Better than a personal check (that someone from another country isn't going to take as what would they do if it bounced?) But backed by a bank, it is more desirable.

Banks charge their fees for all of these, which is another reason why credit cards and ATM's are easier - less fees. Traveler's checks are usually available in other country currencies, but I don't know how easy Eastern Caribbean Dollars are??

JuanB gave you a pretty good description on these. If your dorm asked you to bring a money order or certified check to pay, then I'd go to the bank and get one.

We always take a few travellers checks ( which we often don't even cash anymore) and an ATM card ( but sometimes you can't use it) and some US dollars. Here's some more advice on that: http://www.mousetourstravels.com/money.html

I honestly wouldn't bother with travellers checks - because in my experience I can never find a bank that accepts them. Just bring American money and you can do a currency exchange at the hotel or airport.

travelers check are like cash -expect its easier to replace them if they get stolen.. -if you kept the recipet
most countires also will take US cash.. but the exchange is confusing some times
not sure why someone told you to bring a money order..
