Absolutely !
I've made the sour cream coffee cake recipe from may Kitchen Aid stand mixer manual a number of times because it's great.
I've seen other recipes around using the same ingredient -- just haven't gotten around to try them.
At first I thought Yeh ! sour cream in cake ?? How could that be ?? Oh, it be !!

Another surprising ingredient that works is yogurt. I used this for a banana muffin and blueberry muffin recipe.
I tried numerous recipes for banana muffins - always disappointed as they would turn out leaden. This seem to work The recipe was from the America's Test Kitchen folks.

I don't know what's happening at the chemical level to make these work as an ingredient or what exactly they do, but I'm very satisfied with the results.

I have a couple recipes for cakes and/or quick breads that call for sour cream and they have all turned out great. I think the sour cream gives it a certain 'tang' and makes it very moist.

I love sour cream chocolate cakes!
Sour milk or cream in cakes makes them lighter and fluffier, I find they rise better and higher too!
