right first off get him to only eat kibble food not canned. I understand he doesnt like them but canned food is packed with sugar and fat and is really bad for a dogs teeth and weight.

You can make the kibbles more appetising by half boliling the kettle so its hot not boiling then pouring a bit over the kibbles and sturring them till all are moist but not soaked...kinda like how most ppl enjoy breakfast cerial is the best analogy i can think of lol. doing this makes the food smell nice and its more attractive to the dog..u can also try a little bit of gravey or a stock cube or something poured over the top. it really works in my experiance when trying to get puppies to eat dried food so it should work for you.

I have a large breed dog in her twilight years and she has a large fatty lipoma under her neck and into the chest cavity. The vet believes that it is somewhat supported by the chest muscles. My dog has arthritis and her front feet have fixed at an odd angle. She also had a sarcoma lump removed last year. The sarcoma lump was totally grainy and felt like a bag of rice compared with this fatty type tumour which is just that, it is a large wobbly lump. It is not fixed, by which they mean attached to the muscles or anything else. It is acceptable providing your dog is under vet care and supervision to leave the lump where it is rather than traumatise the dog by removing it. In my dogs case de bulking it is not the issue. That will be the easy bit but healing it up may be a problem.

Well, first of all, to see how overweight your dog really is, stand behind your dog. Then, look down at its back. can you see the sides of its stomach? If so, I would first suggest consulting your dog's vet. Next, NEVER give any pets human food. Animals need special nutrition in order to live. Human food is very bad for them.
It contains fatty acids that are harmful to dogs. These acids can cause your dog to be lazy and unhealthy. I would suggest asking your dog's vet about diet and excersise. There are some healthy canned dog foods that your dog might like. Also, you shouldn't switch dog foods to often. If so, mix some old food with the new food in order for your dog's stomach to get used to it. Finally, excersise. Dogs usually have lots of energy and need to get out at least once a day. You are on the right track to having a healthy dog by walking him every day, but he probably needs more excersise than that. If you have a backyard, let him out to run around and urinate. If you don't, get him a cute toy. Dogs don't have to be outside to get excercise. Play fetch or tug-of-war with him. Hope this works! And please feel free to email me with any questions that you may have.

Good job cutting him off the human food, thats the first step. Make sure you're not over doing the dog treats either. Baby carrots and green beans are a heathly alternative IF he'll eat them. Most brands of dog food offer 'diet' dog food, or low cal...what ever they want to call it and thats another good option for you. Exersize is important so keep up on the walks and play time. If you are actually weighing him and know for sure he's not makingany progress get to your vet for some more options such as prescription diet food and blood work to make sure he doesn't have a thyroid problem.

My min-pin has slowed down recently, and started gaining some weight. I switched her to Pedigree Weight Maintenance not long ago, and she has started losing some weight. That's a dry dog food though, so you'd have to find something like that in canned dog food I guess. Just NO human food. Some of it is not just bad for them, it can be deadly. Chocolate, onions, even garlic can be deadly, especially for a little one like your pup.

If you are "walking him almost everyday," you need to be walking him at least everyday (how does he potty if he doesn't go out everyday?), preferably more than once.

My pup has a doggie door and fenced in back yard, so she plays outside whenever she wants. But she was staying in and sleeping a lot more, so we got her some new toys to get her active inside as well. When she seems to tire of one toy and plays with it less, we give her another one of the new ones. That has worked really well.

If he's getting more exercise and he's eating less but continues to gain weight, I would take him in to the vet to have some bloodwork done. There are some metabolic issues that can be very easy to treat, and just require simple bloodwork and some monitoring periodically. If that turns out okay, your vet would be able to suggest some other things to help out. There are veterinary prescribed "diet" dog foods that can help dogs lose weight. They can also suggest how quickly, based on his age, health, etc, you should expect to see him lose weight depending on how you go about it. Best of luck :)

have the vet check him for hypothyroidism. i've heard of a few dogs that have it. it keeps them from metabolizing food and using the calories properly so they just gain weight very very easily. also you should try other hard food something all natural, maybe even grain free until you find something he likes because hard food is better, has more vitamins and minerals. and you could add some water to the hard food too it helps with smaller dogs.

crunchy treats IE carrots, they will satisfy the dogs urge to chew on something and won't add calories.
Switch to a light dog food..if the dog is hungry enough it will eat it. No more table scraps and human junk food.

You can feed him raw veg as treats and snacks. I swear, if he is hungry enough he WILL eat it. I was amazed to see my fat dog eat some carrot I dropped when I stopped giving her treats. Now she is happy to eat various veg throughout the day and she has a small meal of dog food in the evening. Give it a go.
