My parents gave me a new wood dining set, to replace the card table I was using for a dining room table. It would be very nice, if it weren't such a light stain! My home is black and red colors, so I would prefer a dark stain, or if it were painted black. Can I just paint over it, without doing any prep, or is there an EASY way I can darken the wood? If I did just paint over the whole thing, how long would the paint last?

You could get a darker stain and go over it, also they make black stain, kind of an opaque too. OR-
you can use liquid sandpaper- available in Homedepot and Lowes, its like water and you wipe it on. What it does is form a chemical adhesion between what is there and what you want to put on. You can just wipe it on with a rag. Then spray paint a primer on and paint the table. Ask in your local store but I always do best when I simply read labels on the products- usually a better source of info than salespeople. It just depends on the look you want. Maybe paint lower part and restain the top darker wood stain. I have a set like that and it looks great. Seats of chairs wood stained, rest black. Sounds funny but look on JCPenny online. They have some sets like that and you can get an idea....Have fun.

Just by painting over it, it won't last too long. If you want to beautify the table, this process won't take long at all, and it won't cost you that much, just a little time. Get a real fine sandpaper, and sand it lightly all over get a maple stain, or some what of a dark stain of your choice, and a small sponge. Sponge wipe the stain on the wood all over. Use stain about 2 or 3 coats, use your judgment. The more you put on the better it will look. When that drys get some clear varnish, and varnish the wood. Let dry for each coat. The varnish that you use the better it will look as well. But varnish is your finishing touch. Here is a little trick, on each coat of varnish let dry completely. Take a soft dry cloth and wipe the wood all over as well. Do this little step every time you use varnish, and then when you are finished with your table, it will be immaculate. So beautiful with a gorgeous shine. I hope that this will help.

If you decide to paint it, you really should sand it first...this exposes some of the grain on the wood while removing some of the finish. apply a primer/sealer before your final coat(s) of paint. If your not too hard on your furniture, it should last 5-10 years...if you want to make it last longer, there are some varnishes that can extend the life another 5-10 years.

My guess is ther is probably a urathane glaze on top of the stain so if you were to paint it the paint would begin to chip and peel. At a minimum you need to sand the shine off before you paint it.

Instead of ruining a brand new table you should sell it apply what you get towards the new one of choice. Even better see if furniture store will take it back and apply purchase price to new set. What you are proposing does not make any sense and the fact that you are asking how to do it shows that you are not qualified to do it. you will not get acceptable results and will likely cause ill feelings by the people who gave you the table when they see how you massacred it.

If you sand it lightly with 220 grit you can buy poly with a stain mixed in already, get one with a dark stain and do a few good coats on it sanding with 220 in between coats.

i do carpentry and painting as my personal business. what you need to do first is sand it down by hand with a 220 fine grit sand paper, so that the paint will adhere. prime and paint.
