One thing my child is disabled and had to have needles stuck in him since he was also three.
Do not allow these ignorant nurses to strap your child down or have several of them hold you child down. I throw a fit when a new doctors nurses did this to my child!
If you are scared of needles your child will be too.
What I did when he was small is put him on my lap. Held out my arm first and showed him that needles did not hurt. I explained to him where the needle is going to be placed (by the way you look for the vein that is best for your child, do not rely on the person doing the blood test. Some of these people are basically flunkies and some of them do not know what they are doing! One knows this if the person pricks you or your child more then one time) luckily me and this son have a very good vein on our left arms that are big and very easy to get blood from.
I made a game out of it. I explained before hand that the blood will go into the vile, showed him what the vile was. And said when you fill this one up and if two of them needed filling I would tell him the two get filled up he will get a treat. The doctor usually gives a sticker or sucker but I made it even a bigger treat. Like ice cream or something he wanted.
If your child starts to scream, STOP the procedure. A child who is scared this is a REAL emotion and should not be ignored. This will stay with your child forever. It is easier in the long run to do it right the first time. Treat your child and make the medical community treat your child like a person. Your child will love you for this! Plus no nasty dream and other problems like wetting herself or going back to diapers.
Of course now this child is 11 and is a pro, he was a pro at five.
Good luck and we have been through this MANY times!

I've worked in retail many years piercing children's ears. The best thing to do is do NOT let her see the needle. Also the more calm you are the better, kids sense these things. If you can get her attention on something else this is best. Bring a toy maybe. I think it is traumatizing to restrain the children but gently holding, cuddling, and making her feel safe will help. Piercing ears and drawing blood are different in time length but the best response I always got was when the parents acted all excited once it was over. For example, how proud you are of how well she did.

Most kids are more scared of the scene of the needle than anything else. I usually distract my young kids when i take them to get blood taken by giving them candy and talking to them and of course by blocking their view by having their arm to the technician side while blocking their view so they won't see the needle they will feel a little pinch, but the candy usually do the trick .Good luck.

Bring her favorite toy - and if she has a favorite blanket. 3 year olds like stickers too, as you probably know (save those for after when you tell her she was such a good girl! no matter how she responds).
Definitely hold her in your lap.
Otherwise, there is no getting around the screaming and hysterics which is completely normal for her age.

other then distracting her which won't work once she sees the needle, Tell her it won't hurt very much and only "till the count of three. Tell her she can pitch you when it hurts. Let her put her fingers on your arm or hand or where ever and tell her when it hurts it hurts you too and to pinch you. It distracts them because they are more concerned about you then them self.

The only thing you can really do is talk with her and try to keep her distracted. It is not going to be a pleasent experience for the both of you and unfortunately there is not much you can do...sorry
