it's an unexpected and large find of some sort. Like the Homestake mine was a bonanza of gold. Mostly people use the word with respect to a mineral find but anything of value could be a bonanza (imagine being the first person to realize the potential of the iPod - what a bonanza). Maybe your friends wish you to find one? Different groups have their own unique ways of saying good luck like bikers say "keep the rubber side down" or skydivers say "blue skies". It would be easier, I think, to just say mazaltov.

It was a TV series a few years ago. It had Ben Cartwright, Hoss, Little Joe, and a couple of others.
I don't think they were Jewish cowboys...but they might have been.
