What are some good specs to have on a new 800 dollar or so new LCD HD TV? i'm guessing something around a 8ms refresh rate and i'm not sure if 500:1 is better than 1600:1? Is it better to have a smaller ratio? What other things should i be looking at that are important?

The higher the ratio the deeper the your blacks will be. So yes it is good to have a high ratio. The 8ms response rate is pretty standard for any LCD. Most TV's have similar features so if you're wondering about bang for your buck, you should be looking at size and brand. My store sells some 32" plus LCD's for well under $800, but my big brands like Sharp and Samsung are well over $800 for the same size TV.

You want the fastest response time possible 8ms is not bad but 4,5,6ms is better. and you want also a Highest ratio for the contrast. I would say at least 500:1 but 700:1 is better. The highest the ratio the more light you can have in a rooand still see a clear and bright picture. Also look for the widest viewing angle 130 degrees or better. Other than that you just look for one you like.
