Therefore it grows straight up.
The lateral branches grow from the lateral buds.
Therefore they are on the side.

They are different individual organs with different purposes.
A purpose of the trunk is to give height; aiding in competition for sunlight. The branches provide the support for branches (which support twigs that support leaves, for photosynthesis.
Each has individual charactersitics; and not all plants have all the typical organs (root, trunk, twig, branch, leaf)

Thats the way nature planed it. Also if the branches grew straight there would be no individuality to the trees, all trees would look alike except for the leaves.

my opinion that : as the branches grow horizontally it will try to make a right angle with the land as a result to the auxins effect but it is smaller and weeker than trunk and it carry the plant's paper . so , there are two forces affect that branch and they aer almost equal . (according to the branch's strong )
