I'm a Registered Veterinary Technician. I went to school for 2 years to get my Associate of Applied Science degree in Veterinary Technology. Like someone else said, you take anatomy, physiology, chemistry (unless you took it in H.S.), microbiology, introduction to veterinary technology, principles and practice of veterinary technology, pharmacology, laboratory animal science, large animal science...you also need to take a certain number of hours of English/Literature, history, social studies, etc.
In order to become registered or certified, you have to pass both the state and national board exams. These exams test your knowledge of veterinary science and the laws associated with it. In order to keep your registration or certification, you are required to obtain at least 5 hours of continuing education credit each year. These can be obtained by attending meetings/classes or reading journal articles related to the field.

A veterinary assistant is not the same as a technician. They do many of the same jobs but an assistant usually does not have as much formal schooling as a tech.

A vet assistant and a vet tech are different. a vet tech must go to an accreditated school for about 2 years, and becom licensed. I vet assistant usually gets on the job training. So you need to decide how much school you want and what kind of pay you are expecting.

I am currently training in high school to be a Vet. Asst. I've heard that after you finish high school you'll have 4 years of college (Usually of Science or some such) and then you'd need 4 years of an actual Vetrinary School (I've heard that the University of P.A is the Best in the nation) But that's what i've heard.
Right now im a sophmore, I train with dogs (Grooming, taking care of them...ect.) almost everyday. Courses for something like this would depend on the type of work that you'd want to do. *Surgeon, a regular Asst. or nurse, ect)

Vet Tech and vet assistant are TWO DIFFERENT things. A vet asst. is someone off the street or who has taken courses in "helping a vet". A vet tech goes to college for 2-4 years and can do things like a nurse would do. TOTALLY different. Many times the vets hired an asst. to assist ME as the vet tech.
In college, you take Anatomy, Microbiology, Pharmocology, Chem, and MANY animal courses like Med/Surgical nursing, Anesthesia, Farm animal , Lab animal, Necropsy, animal behavior.......there are just too many to name. HEAVY in the science area!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is usually a 2 year course. Depending on the school you go to you'll take classes in anatomy, nutrition, biology, dentistry, zoonosis, lab, just to name a few things. Many of these will be general studies. You will work with mice, cats, dogs, livestock, horses...etc.
