PLEASE don't imagine anyone in their underwear or anything funny first of all...I was told this in 4th grade for my first solo and broke down laughing...they actually had to start the song over. twice. What works best for me is to get lost in the music. Don't think about the people you are singing in front of, think about who you're really singing it for...yourself. Throw yourself into every note you sing, and focus so much on what you're doing musically that not only will you not think about the people you're singing in front of, you'll focus on the music more than your nerves and will sound loads better. And confident. Put it into your head before you get on stage that you are going to go out there and do your thing, and not worry about the people there. also think about all the people that would love to have the voice you have, and dedicate it to them; they idolize you and in their eyes, you're already so amazing it wouldn't matter if you mess up because everything you sing is already impressive to them. Hope this helps, and break a leg!

You actually asked two questions here. The 1st "How do I avoid being nervous....?"
The answer: You don't. Nervousness or stage fright aflicts every entertainer on every level. So the only thing you can do is get used to it. If this is your 1st time on stage before an audience then stage fright is unavoidable, you will have at least a little, & it's healthy as long as it doesn't stop you completely from getting up there & doing your act.
You didn't say if you were going up solo, or in an ensemble. I always found it easier when I shared the stage with someone else, & we could share the responsibility of entertaining our audience.

The 2nd question, "How should I avoid screwing up?"
The answer: Well you are right about one thing. Nerves can play a big role in getting screwed up on stage if you let them.
However, you could deliver a technically perfect performance, & still come up short on entertaining people.
So remember your 1st responsibility is to entertain.
I remember one time I was on stage with my band, & things weren't going so well with the audience. The more grumpy the audience got, the more nervous I got. Then the worst thing happened, or so I thought. One of my guitar strings broke.
My 1st instinct was to excuse myself from the stage, & replace the string, but one of our entourage had already reached into my guitar case & threw a replacement on stage to me, so I stayed up there & replaced the string while me & the guys told a few joke to the crowd.
That won the crowd over, & we had a great night after that.
We all screw up on stage all of the time. The trick to being an entertainer as opposed to just being a perfect singer, is to make the screw ups just as entertaining as the parts that go well.
Believe it or not, if you have the audience with you, then they are with you emotionally as if they were all on that stage beside you.
So go ahead & screw up. I don't mean to do it on purpose, but if you do, make it so it's fun for the audience. If they laugh, it's not because they hate you, it's because you succeded in ENTERTAINING THEM, & that's why you are there isn't it!
So don't treat a screw up as a disaster, just look at it as a part of the act you are now delivering, & move on. Chances are most of the small mistakes will be completely missed by the audience anyway.
So sing well, & have fun.
BREAK A LEG!

Know your song inside out, and if someone is playing the accompaniment for you, then practice with them a lot before the day of show. Then go over the song a few times with them before the show. Also putting your hands together and stroking the part of your hand between the thumb and your index finger, it helps people calm down. Then when you're singing just enjoy the music, just pretend that you're at home and practicing. I hope that helped ^_^

You can't. What you can do is use the energy that nervousness creates to your advantage. If you think of the "jitters" as energy surges, you can picture them being channeled into your performance, supporting your voice and amplifying your talent. I'm an actor, and this technique has worked for me for years. Don't focus on screwing up, focus on channeling the energy. Just shifting your mind from the performance to the process will help enormously. Break a leg!

Nervousness is always going to be there no matter what you do. The trick is to embrace it. I always have a backing track going in my head, like an arpeggio on piano or drums or something. That way you really aren't the first note, your only making an entrance. The first note is the most critical, musically and also for your confidence.

As for you personally, dealing with butterflies is something unique in every person, and often it is trail and error.

Ultimately, though, have fun performing.

Relize that you can only do the best that you can do, and that no one at that show is your enemy, they came because they wanted to hear you, not because they want to crucify you. And you are your own worst critic; even if something did happen, it would be way less of a deal than you think. Also, just before the show, do a stress relieving execise, like pushing your hands together and growling, or primal screaming outside the building.

When I sing I think of someone I love or care about and focus on pleasing them or even dedicate that song to them.Another thing to do is blur the croud and think about doing your best even just for yourself.

Realize that the people you are singing to are just people. Imagine that you are watching yourself and you wont be so nervous. And besides you probably wont see any of those people ever again.

Don't look at the people in the crowd, look at something on the wall just above their heads and don't take your eyes off of it, look at it and listen to the music as you sing to it.

my advice would have been to not sing. EVERYbody sings at talent shows...
or dances... at my talent show, out of the 30 people, i was the one of only three who played an instrument. the tenor saxophone.
