TOO MUCH!!! Me and my now-fiance are average people with average incomes, I told him early on that I would kill him if he spent the two months salary they say the man's supposed to pay for the ring. Now I have the most beautiful engagement ring (white gold, twenty tiny diamonds and a large emerald-cut garnet) that only cost $350 (canadian) Granted it was from Costco and is valued at closer to $500, but I get compliments ALL the time. As for the set or not, I would reccommend a set just so that you can wear both rings together after the big day (and it's usually a bit of savings) That's the only downfall with mine, our bands won't fit with my ring!!

My engagement ring is a half carat marquise cut diamond set in gold and it cost my husband a little over a thousand dollars from Kay Jewelers. In my opinion, I think buying a wedding set would be better, and could save you money in the end because you don't have to go out and buy a whole other ring at full price. Most sets are the engagement ring and the wrap that the engagement ring sits down into and that is considered your wedding band. These can be very pretty. Good luck on finding your perfect ring!

Well, it depends on the girl really... Most people would go for at least 1/2 ct... That's going to run around $1500-$2000, maybe a bit less if you get a super deal and depending on the stone. I've seen nice .71 ct center stone rings at Sam's Club (I work there) for $1700, and one of them even comes with the matching band... I suggest you go look (I think Costo have jewelry too) If you see anything you like in your budget, get a membership ($40), buy the ring, then a few weeks later get a full refund on the membership (If you don't wanna keep it... the price of stuff there is so much cheaper!!! (Like milk, eggs, meat!) I originally expected a nice 1/5 ct solitaire (I saw it at Sam's for around $350) I would have been okay with that.... I fell in L-O-V-E with a 1/3 ct solitaire that cost $750, but thinking it was too much, I kept my mouth shut... I got a beautiful .86 ct solitaire, with amazing color (E) and good clarity... I don't know how much he spent on it (I don't wanna ask) but, I looked around at "comparable" rings, ans I know for a fact he could not have spent any less than $1500. I almost had a heart attack! It's amazing!!!!! I get compliments on it all the time... Go with the best you can afford, and trust your instinct. My ring has an inclusion that, because of the location, can't really be seen, but that little inclusion kept the price down... a "less included stone" would probably go for around $3K... If you see the speck, try something else, maybe a bit smaller, but that looks clear to you... Good luck!

your question is pretty broad, an average engagement ring? It all depends on the gold weight, diamond weight, yellow gold, white gold, platinum..etc Personally I would encourge you to buy a wedding set, this way you have the perfect match. If money is an issue, perhaps try a pawn shop of used jewelry, some have nice pieces and some can even order new jewelry at much lower costs than a jewelry store. It really just depends on your definition of "average".

Yes a wedding set is best to buy. It costs less to buy as a set than individually and you dont have to pick out the wedding band for her later. Just present the engagement ring part and tell her you already have the wedding band but don't show it to her until close to the wedding date.
Rings are traditionally 2 months salary. Meaning whatever you make in 1 month at your job times it by 2 and buy a ring at least close to if not over that amount. Mine ring was more than my car, by the way. But you dont have to spend that much. Buy platinum (lasts longer, looks better, and some people can be allergic to white gold or gold). So I would say get a ring about at least 2-3,000. And buy a wedding set if you can find one you like.
Also bring a close friend or family member of your GF's that knows her taste to help pick out the ring.

About 600 to 800 is average, and you can get a fairly decent diamond for that. Well, your guy would be buying the set, but he wouldn't be giving you the wedding band til the ceremony.

You and your man should do some research on how to pick quality rings. Then, once you have some knowledge, pick out two stone shapes you like. Look at sets together ( I think sets are best, cost efficient and it looks better in the long run), then let him make the ultimate decision.
How exciting! I remember when me and my husband picked out rings...

I sold jewelry for three years....the price of rings will very a ton based on the "four c's" they are Carat, Clarity, Color, and Cut! You can go to any search engine and get a load oinfo on this!!! This is how diamonds are priced. Read all about it so you dont get ripped off. Also research Clarity Enhanced because its a GREAT way to save money!
