Connecticut Transport apparently offers direct bus service from Stamford to downtown White Plains. Then take the #12 bus to the airport ($.175, takes about an hour due to frequent stops en route)

If that doesn't work for you, take Metro-North RR from Stamford to Port Chester

Take the #13 bus to White Plains ($1.75 - you may be able to get a transfer, and save a second fare on the next bus. ask when you get on the #13)

Take the #12 bus to the airport (it's about an hour, and you backtrack along the #13 route, but it's unavoidable)

well most economical besides walking would be hitchhiking if you are brave enough but I would recommend renting a car or taking a bus..
