"Tom and Jerry" - 12 servings

6 eggs; separated, at room temperature
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 cup sugar
12 oz. light rum (1 1/2 cups)
12 oz. brandy (1 1/2 cups)
4 1/2 cups hot milk
Ground nutmeg

1) In large bowl with mixer at high speed, beat egg whites and vanilla until soft peaks form. Gradually sprinkle in sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating until stiff peaks form.
2) In small bowl with mixer at high speed, beat yolks until thick and lemon-colored. Fold into whites.
3) To serve: Spoon 1/2 cup egg mixture into each of twelve 10-ounce mugs. To each, add 1 ounce rum and 1 ounce brandy. Fill each mug with hot milk; stir. Sprinkle with nutmeg and serve immediately. Yields 12 cups.
