I think you are right on track. Not only are shows like that violent and inappropriate, but they call each other things like "loser," "jerk," and "moron." Not good.
My daughter is 5 and she is not allowed to watch those shows, nor is she permitted to watch Bratz, among others.
She loves the shows on Disney. We watch The Suite Life of Zach and Cody, That's So Raven, and Hannah Montana.
We also get a lot of movies through Blockbuster online.

I think it's very important to keep an eye on what your six-year-old is watching, and also restrict it if you feel it's necessary. If you're not comfortable w/ Sponge Bob and Fairly OddParents, then maybe introduce her to some other shows that you might find more age-appropriate: Clifford or Curious George (PBSKids). Someone else here mentioned Noggin, which is a channel that's geared towards Preschoolers. My daughter is six and still loves the shows on Noggin, plus there are no commercials. If you can get that channel, I'd highly recommend it. I personally think Fairly OddParents is a funny show, and my daughter likes it, but if you're uncomfortable with it, you certainly should restrict what she watches. There are tons of quality kids' TV shows out there, so there's bound to be something that you and your daughter will both agree on.

I don't think Sponge Bob is too bad. That's all my younger brother used to watch. My son is only 14 months, and the only show he'll watch is Blues Clues. I personally will limit his television when he gets older- and he doesn't really watch that much right now anyways. I've seen Dora and Diego- I think they are SO annoying and loud. I also don't really care for the Backyardigans-kinda annoying as well. Anyways, you can always limit the amount of time she is watching tv... and if it so happens to be during those shows that she can't sit at the tv. then so be it. You could always have her watch a favorite DVD movie, or even get her favorite cartoon on DVD- we have a couple of Blues Clues DVD's so if we miss Blue's Clues, then we can always watch it on DVD if he gets bored. This way you know what they are watching, and something won't surprise you.
A favorite of my own was Punky Brewster, we got that on DVD lol, and I love it still to this day.
Feel free to limit tv if you don't feel it's appropriate for your daughter. Just don't go overboard- my mom only allowed PG movies in our home and blocked all tv channels except for the news and cartoons when I was a senior in high school! I felt deprived.

Things like Dora and Backyardigans are a little beneath a 6 yr. old. My 6 yr. old only watches them if his younger brother happens to be watching them. My 6yr. old loves Jimmy Neutron, Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents among other things. We don't have cable or anything so he watches them on DVD from time to time. I've watched with him and I also enjoy those shows. I don't see anything overly violent about them at all. They're cute and funny. Part of allowing a child to watch television is to have open communication about what they are seeing. Really, the news is worse than any cartoon. I've known mothers who have banned certain cartoons they deemed inappropriate but would sit on their butts in front of the soaps while their kid was in the room. Or they allow them to watch CSI or movies where everyone is getting shot. My son is a huge fan of Spongebob and he isn't any worse off because of it. Just like I used to watch Elmer Fudd shoot at Bugs Bunny or the Road Runner get to that Coyote. Looney Tunes is filled with guns, bombs, etc. Yet, generations of people have watched those cartoons and are okay. I think you need to lighten up.

did you watch road runner as a kid? These were a lot more violent than the two you mention. If she starts acting out with violence maybe restrict it. I am against some cartoons but those two are harmless. If you look back at the violence in the "old" cartoons you would be amazed. Think about Tom and Jerry or Bugs bunny. Elma fudd often shot Daffy in the head with a shot gun. But if you don't like them then turn it off. You are the parent and she will cope with out them

The type of TV shows she watches is what you want her to watch. I think that as long as she understands that the shows are fake you should be all right. You also need to understand as children grow so dose their minds so I would suggest allowing her to watch only educational shows. This is what I do with my children, but i still allow them to watch other shows. I have talked to them and told them that this is a TV show and it is fake all things in it are fake and that they shouldn't try to reenact them. Though this doesn't stop him, he understands that it is fake and that he is just playing around.

I don't think those cartoons are violent. I never thought of them that way, my son's been watching them forever and he's normal. He's 8 and he watched them when he was little.
