This is my question... and a simple one. Why do people, like atheist, denounce GOD and claim he doesn't exist and they don't need him, but then when 9/11 came, there were more people at church that following sunday, than in the last 10 years combined. Sources say that many atheists and agnostics flocked to the church that day. Why, when things go wrong, do some people turn to GOD and religon, but want nothing else to do with him any other day?

Is it because they only believe what they can understand, and they only contemplate the existence of God when something out of the ordinary happens?

Yeah, that little factoid of yours about 911 isn't true. Quite obviously, since over 50% of the population attends mass at least once a year if not more, then that would mean 500% of all the people in America went to church that day. And I know I wasn't one of those 500% percent.
What I don't understand is why people turn to god when bad things happen - didn't god cause them? Or at least not pervent them?

So your source took a poll at the churches that day? The people that went to church were probably the holiday church crowd, the ones that only go when it seems pious.

Which source is that? This is the same old stuff that people "hear" but have NOTHING to back it up with.
I don't know of a single atheist that went to chruch or decided god was his new best friend after 9/11. I know some christians that had a recommitment to THEIR faith, but no atheists.
Stop saying things that just ain't true if you've got nothing but "a very strong feeling and something my pastor said" to back it up.

god is imaginary, there is no doubt of that. People treat him as their imaginary friend, and use the concept as a coping mechanism. When overwhelming events occur, it is easier to put "faith" in something else ("it's god's plan" is often heard). In other words, they can't find anything to hold onto except the belief that things will be better in the "next life". Problem is, there is no next life, and people are living a delusion.

Utter horseshit.
The people in those churches were not atheists, but christians who simply don't bother with church.
And you know it.
This is yet another example of the pious fraud that states "there are no atheists in foxholes". Which is patently untrue.

Why are you so desperate to convince yourself that everyone shares your beliefs? I'd think that if you had any faith at all you could handle the fact that atheists are perfectly decent, smart, sincere people who do not believe in god, and that we don't suddenly "turn to god" when bad things happen. That's just utter nonsense obviously made up by people desperate to convince themselves of what they know to be false. There simply isn't any "god".
I challenge you to put your "sources" into the "additional comments" area: I'm betting they're just more desperate make-believe Christian stories, if you didn't just make it up yourself.

Not this atheist....
At this point, I'm pretty sure that I will die as an atheist. I have thrown away everythiong that everyone has told me about god and used my own senses and faculties and searched for somethig verifiable. If there was an all powerful being that loved me and need my blind worship, then he failed to communicate with me.

Atheists don't care about your stinking made-up delusional vane vindictive psychologically disturbed god creature. IT DOESN'T EXIST. What we do care about is what twisted things people do in the name of this fraudulent god.
