Reaching enlightenment is an ongoing process. When a student claims he has met Buddha, it is usually an early realization of what Buddha represents, not the real thing. If one stops at their first conception they may go no furthur, so it is necessary to "kill" that buddha and continue the search. An early conception of buddha ( or any religious figure or philsophy for that matter) may make one stop searching and thus have only a small and superficial understanding of what it is they have found. They must attack that very understanding, re-examine it, refute it, even turn away from it, until they understand it completly. When they do understand it completly, they won't meet him on the road, but in the mirror.

what are you talking about? oh oh.
like--don't live for buddha and this religion? ummm...
I think buddhism is just a path to walk to set you in the right direction. In the end you must not follow a path. You must "kill the buddha".

I think the real quote is:

"If you meet the Buddah on the street, kill him. He is an imposter. The real Buddah is inside us."

IDK if it is a real commandment; the pacifistic nature of Buddhism would suggest it is not. More probably a parable pointing to inward contemplation: find the real enlightenment on the inside, and don't go chasing magicians. Or something like that.

I think Buddha meant, "if you find someone who claims to be perfectly enlightened, kill them." Doesn't seem very passive and buddhalike to me tho.
