I bought a package with 2 tests in it. Both said I was pregnant. I had twins. Glad I didn't buy one with 3 in it.

If you take a home pregnancy test too early, you may get a false negative result. A false negative result is when the test says you are not pregnant but you are. This can be misleading and when using home pregnancy tests you must be very careful of avoiding any factors that may cause false results.
There could be various reasons for a false negative test.
Early Detection Attempt
One reason for a false negative pregnancy test could be that you took the test too early. Pregnancy tests vary in their sensitivity which means how soon they can detect the hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. It is possible that although your ovum might be fertilized, meaning you may be pregnant, but your body has not started secreting enough Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) for the test to measure. Your body needs time for the hormone to rise to a high enough level to be detected in a test.
Erratic Technique
There is a possibility that while using the home pregnancy test strip you either did not dip it well or did not hold it well in your urine stream. This error in technique may give false negative results.
Missed Reaction Time
For accuracy in home pregnancy tests it is essential that you read the test results in the stipulated reaction time. If you let the test sit for too long (after the instructions on the box tell you), the test is invalid. This may cause it to show false negative results.
If the home pregnancy test shows negative results but you still think you could be pregnant, wait a few days and try again. A negative result can mean that you are not pregnant, you took the test too early or you took the test wrong. Also, if you have received different answers on multiple pregnancy tests, it is recommended that you get a blood test done to get an accurate answer.

I can't give you a percentage, but it is true that some women either never or only later in a pregnancy actually have a positive at home pregnancy test. Because the at home tests use your urine, for some women, the hcg never reach the urine in high enough doses to trigger a positive test. The most accurate test would be a blood test given by the ob. If you have pregnancy symptoms, such as missed period, and tender breasts, and the at home tests are coming back negative more than a week after missing your period, than I would get to your ob and have the blood test done to be sure.

Hey there!
When I began to have suspicions, i took home a pregnancy test. The test said positive and I immediately contacted my doctor who confirmed my suspicions. But that's not to say all are accurate. But it safe to contact a doctor just in case you are not sure. Congratulations to all future mommies out there!
Good luck!
Peace

there is a thing called FALSE NEGATIVE which occurs more often then a FALSE POSITIVE.
FALSE NEGATIVES cannot always be accounted for a test's inaccuracy, it's more of testing too early for HCG to be detected in urine.
it's best to test a few days or a week after missed period.
as we cannot pinpoint one's day of implantation, we cannot right out conclude as to what day it is best to test.
all i know is that once the egg implants in one's uterus, the HCG level in blood as well as in urine doubles every two days. so assuming that you've implanted at 12dpo (which is the latest possible), it's best to test at 19dpo or a weeks after implantation.
it's also best to use the most sensitive brand you could get : 10-25mIU/mL..

Mine were accurate. The ones i took when i was pregnant showed positive in less than a minute.
The false alarms i have had when i took the tests they were right in saying negative.
I have taken named brand ones and genric ones and ones that costs a dollar and they have all been correct.
