no butter or margerine in needed, just follow the directions. if you dont have vegetable oil you can try another oil like canola oil or any of the others if you dont have anything i would go out and buy some. you dont want to ruin your cupcakes.

I would not recommend substituting the butter/margarine for the vegetable oil.

If you bough the cake mix that stated that you needed butter then you would be fine.

I made a cake once and the box stated to use 1 pound of butter, and I used margarine instead and the cake did not rise and cook properly. Butter is a baking good, and margarine is for rice, toast etc.

Get the vegetable oil...

Buy/borrow the vegetable oil for this mix.

These cake mix people go to extreme lengths to optimize their product. If the recipe calls for Veg Oil, use the oil.

If you ever make a cupcake from scratch, then you can use butter or margarine.
When making from scratch, I use 1/2 stick of butter, and the remainder, margarine.
Butter for taste, margarine, because it cheaper.

Get the oil so you can properly enjoy your cupcakes from this mix.

btw: Welcome to the world of baking, a world of experimentation and surprises.

If you don't have vegetable oil, the margarine softened may work for you look at the ingredients and see how much of a percentage of it is vegetable oil
