I'm 23 and quite mature, stable, and in no way dependent on outside funding from a man. A man has crossed my path who is 36 and interested. Though I was initially concerned about the age gap, he's really pretty nice. Only 2 dates so far..

Are there any hidden issues I should watch out for?

Yes, the fact that he's almost 40 years old and you're 23 would make me think he has a problem with women his own age. Or, women his own age wouldn't be interested in him because he's weird, so he has to find very young girls to date. Ask him why he doesn't date women his own age, about 10 years old than you. Isn't he closer to your mom's age than yours?

You are old enough to where the gap in age is just a number. I say go for it. Most of the time it's just doomed if your under 21.

I don't think we should allow society to dictate age restrictions in relationships. There is a 21 year age gap between my boyfriend and I (I'm 27). I have never been happier in my life. Just like with any relationship, it needs to have the essentials like trust, understanding, communication, interests, goals, etc. If those elements are in place, then nothing else matters. Love is the greatest feeling in the world, and age shouldn't stop anyone from experiencing it.

Rock on! Age is not too much of an issue once you are over 21 in my book.

Well, it really doesn't matter now because you are not young. Go for it.
