I just had a minor surgery and I was prescribed pain killers for the pain. I've been taking them and I've felt extremely depressed since taking it. Could they be the cause of the depression? I mean, the surgery is minor so I really do not think it is from that.
The pills are called hydrocodone

hydrocodone is generic for vicodin and i do believe it can cause depression depending on the persons body chemistry. i went through a mild depression taking them, but after taking them for awhile i feel fine. they do cause mood swings and are addicting so if you dont really need them just take aspirin or aceteminophin. im 37 and am going in for my SECOND total hip replacement soooooo i kinda have ALOT of experience with them. email me if u want more info on its affects, and good luck!

Interesting ..since the surgery was 'so minor" why take a heavy duty narcotic pain med. If you can stop taking them I would and switch to an over the counter med. Motrin, Tylenol etc...( of course check with your Doctor)
If the pain is not 'excruciating" you really don't need the vicodin.
Yes Pain meds do cause depression in some people, though the pharmaceutical companies would have you think the depression is due to the illness/surgery that led to the need for the meds as the cause of the depression.

Opioid medications are not used to reduce inflammation. They are specifically for pain. Based on the time of events, it is unlikely that she still has any of those remaining in her system, as the longest lasting injection lasts 12 hours. If she has a patch (Fentanyl) on for pain, this could make her feel different. I want to make sure she is getting something for pain at home as she may not be able to get comfortable, and an antiinflammatory medication (Rimdayl, Metacamm, Deramaxx) may not be enough depending on what is wrong. There are other synthetic opioid medications available as well. I would advise calling the doctor who treated her and get their input as well. Good luck.

Yes! This happened to my father in law a few years ago. Good reason not to take the hydrocodone for too long, other than the other, more obvious reasons.
