The best and quickest way to ripen anything - and I do it with avocados all the time - is to put it in a paper bag with a couple of bananas.
Ethylene gas is a natural by-product given off by fruit, but especially bananas, which speeds up the ripening process.
So if you don't like your bananas too ripe and spotty, you'd better separate them in the fruit bowl, and/or put them around some unripe avocados...:)

The brown paper bag works. I have heard that if you put an apple with the avocados in the bag, they will ripen even faster, but I haven't tested that.

Put them in a warm place. They will ripen very quickly that way. BTW I love guacamole!!!
