A lot of different ways. The most common is simply genetics. However, you can also get cancer from carcinogenic (cancer - causing) substances: most commonly cigarettes or radiation.
Cancer is the result of cells not receiving the instructions to stop multiplying, and hence, it is not contagious.
EDIT - The previous two answers are completely incorrect. You don't get cancer from drugs, nor do you get cancer from sex.

There are lots of ways that cancer occurs. Cancer happens when one of your cells sort of goes crazy - it has a change in an important gene that makes it act differently than it did before. Sometimes the change in the gene is caused by a chemical called a carcinogen - in other words a substance that tends to cause changes in cells that make them cancerous. Sometimes UV light causes changes in genes that make a cell cancerous - this is why if you get sunburned a lot you have an increased risk of skin cancer. Sometimes a cell becomes cancerous from a viral infection-- for instance Hepatitis C Virus increases the risk for developping liver cancer and some types of human papiloma virus (HPV) increase the risk for getting cervical cancer: however, most virus do NOT cause cancer - like colds and flu just make you feel sick for a little while.
Note that none of these causes guarantee that someone will get cancer, they just increase the chances of a cell becoming cancerous.
Other times, there is just a mistake in your cell that happens at random.

Cancer cells are cells that do not die. Each minute we have millions and millions of cells that die and reproduce. Die and reproduce. The ones that do not die cause cancer.
