My boss didn't use one either, he had a secretary who took dictation.
The old telephones of yesteryear, had a dial with numbers, and an O for the Operator. A person would turn the dial for the numbers, but sometimes, the operator had to be called.Then, you had to put your finger in the Operators hole and jiggle it until she came.
