Haagen Dazs is a creation of some smart marketing guys. They made the name *look* foreign by using the umlat and the double vowels but it is actually made in NJ.
Also, they used to have the outline of Denmark on thier packaging to infer that is came from some small north-european country and I think I remember an older friend telling me that they "invented" a country to say it was from and even had some story about that country's history and whatnot as part of thier marketing campaign. I can't find any reference to this online but the below links point you in the right direction.
Fruzen Gladje has a simliar story but with a more Scandinavian touch.

"Haagen Daz" and "Fruzen Gladje" do not come from any language at all -- they're just made up names, but they fool us all until we find out.
I've always assumed that "Edy's" is made by a Hispanic gentleman named Eduardo. I'll be disappointed if that is not the case!

"Haagan Daaz" was a made up name by the developer of the product (a Jew in New Jersey, by the way, who just died recently). I believe the same of Fruzen Gladje. Edy's is American, the 2nd brand name for the same product as Dreyer's.

Contrary to common belief, the name is not European; it is simply two made-up words meant to look European to American eyes.
