Actually, God never said this to Adam and Eve. The only time it's mentioned in the Bible is Genesis 8 & 9, where God is speaking to Noah and his family. According to the account, the world-wide flood has taken place and Noah and his family are responsible for repopulating the earth. So, God is promising his protection for them and saying that he'll watch over them, while they, like the people above said, "make babies."

This was told to all living things, male and female. It is in Genesis 1:28 to adam and Eve. To jump start the Human race. Be fruitful is being filled with seeds of your own kind. Multiply means to make more. He also said to replenish the earth. He also said this in Genesis 9:1 to Noah and his sons after the great flood, to recover from the massive loss of life.

God told Adam and Eve to be fruitful, and multiply. Be fruitful could mean anything, as long as it is productive. And multiply....that explains itself.

God told Adam and Eve to populate the earth. Considering there's only one way to do that, any religions who claim that sex was the original sin are clearly incorrect. Sex within marriage was a divine command.

It means, do whatever you can to further the human race. Don't have sex just for the fun of it, have sex to have children.
And don't murder your unborn children.
