I got my tongue pierced about 5 months ago. There are good and bad things about it. I researched the subject in depth when I was considering getting it pierced because I wanted to make sure it wouldn't compromise my health or anything like that. The risk of infection is very low and the only problem I had was the lack of food in the first 3 days or so. Some people have the swelling worse than others (ice chips reduce this swelling) but it does take awhile to get used to it. For the first couple weeks or so you'll get used to it and the swelling will drop dramatically within the first week. The only thing that I find bad about it is 1, a smooth spot where the ball lays forms on the roof of your mouth, its not bothersome by any means however my mom works for a dentist and despite the fact that I'm of legal age to get it pierced I fear her finding out because the dentist will see the spot, 2, make sure that you're careful in the first few weeks while you have the steel barbell in, and when it's healed change the barbell to an acryllic ball because the steel on the original barbell can chip your teeth, and 3, if you can get past the first 4 or 5 days then it's perfect after that. If you make it through the lack of solid foods, swollen tongue, and you can resist talking for a while (the hardest part for me) then you'll love it after that. I also don't like to show it off so much simply because of the way some people look at you, like it's a promiscuous thing when it definitely was not, however, since the piercing, I definitely have had a lot of complements on kissing so that is a definite perk!
Also, the piercer will tell you everything to do! Listen to him!! Make sure you go to a place that is clean and well respected for what they do.
In the end it's completely up to you, if you want it, get it, I really enjoy mine simply because I'm very orally fixated. (psychologically- chewing on pens, biting my nails etc) The health risks aren't as bad as some people will tell you they are, people will try to talk you out of it because of stereotypes and other things, but it all comes down to what you want.

I've had my tongue pierced for years.
The first few days are the worse. You might not be able to talk or eat. Your tongue will swell massively. It will hurt.
They put a clamp on your tongue and pull it way out. That's not a great experience. Then they shoot the stud through, put the balls on and it's done.
Once the swelling starts to go down, you'll lisp a bit. It gets better over time, especially when you take out the enormously long piercing stud and put in a shorter one sized for the thickness of your tongue (I got pierced with a 7/8" and wear a 1/2" and can even get a 3/8" in but it feels tight.)
It's hard to eat at first. You'll bite the stud a lot. Be careful not to break your teeth. Foods like pizza are hard to eat because the cheese gets wound round the stud until you re-learn how to eat.
Don't get into the habit of running your stud along your teeth (it's fun, I know) and try not to to rest the bottom ball behind your bottom teeth as you will wear away the gums and even your teeth.
If you spend a long time kissing, the balls might loosen. Check them every day. Carry a spare with you (whole stud with balls) because you'll eventually swallow one.

There is just some swelling. Suck on popcicles and swish with a solution of listerine and water ofter to prevent infection. Also take advil for the pain and swelling.

You are just setting yourself up to alot of infections. This is an open place in your body and that's where the virus', and bacteria just love to go to. Do not do this. You will regret it.
