My great-grandma has been introducing me to all of these Black guys and asking them to go out with me. She doesn't want me to date out of my race because she says that our blood is already cursed with French and Spanish blood. She doesn't like my friend who happens to be white and Irish and she keeps on threating to send me to the Domincan Republic or South Carolina if I don't break up with him. I told my mom and grandma about it and she was being stubborn and having her tamturms. She has a lot of haterd towards Irish men and white men in particular because her firat husband was Irish and he was abusive and he had raped her. I feel sad for my abuela but I told her that my friend John was avery nic eand sweet guy so sweet that he even gave her some flowers. Why won't she accept that I don't care that he's Irish or not?

Racism shouldn't be tolerated. And I'm adamantly against it. But there are some situations where you have to understand the source.

Keep in mind that your great grandmother grew up in a generation that was extremely harsh on black women. She didn't read about hatred against blacks, she lived it. And during her youth, white men got away with doing things to black women that they would be in jail for these days. They humliated black women, abused them, used them - all with or without consent.

More than likely she is doing what she thinks is "protecting" you, forgetting the world has changed. If you can, try reminding her that the "evils" of her generation are not the "evils" of your generation. Or better yet, sit down with her and have her describe her life. It'd probably be better than any history class you can take.

Just make sure you maintain your current outlook on life. Because, truly, no one should be judged based on skin color. And you seem to not only think like that, but live like that.

That's very sad, but she has her own prejudices. You just need to be patient with her because she's had some bad experiences. Tell her that you are sorry what happened to her, but continue to tell her and show her that your friend John is a nice guy. He may never win her over. It's sad but her prejudice is no different than what people of your race have been experiencing for a long time - she is making a hasty judgement based on a few people. But you're probably not going to change her mind but you should live your life the way you want to.
