If the vacuum is on the same circuit as the TV it will cause interference. The TV is not damaged

The color to older TVs can be temporarily affected by magnetic fields, or permanently by strong ones. For example, do not put speakers next to your TV or you may cause color distortions. Vacuums do not have strong magnets nor electromagnets in them so it is unlikely they will affect the color. As long as you don't run the vacuum for a long time next to the TV you will not see any lasting affect.

What they may do is when you run the vacuum on the same electrical line as the TV, the current flows into the vacuum and may change frequency within the vacuum. This may cause an additional frequency on the electrical line, which will show up as static on the TV. If you see this, it is a temporary issue and is not worth worrying about, but if you *are* worried you can move the vacuum to an outlet on a different line (usually a different wall will do the trick).

Well,

I don't know about TV's, but running the vacuum while the stereo is on, will definitely take the harmony out of the music.

Urban legend, my dear.....humour your parents. Don't run the vacuum with the TV on in their house, but keep doing it in yours.

A long time ago, TV's were very sensitive to the EMF interference caused by electric motors of any kind. When I was a boy, and you ran the vacuum in the same room as the TV, or even ran an electric mixer in the kitchen while the TV was on, the picture got really weird. TV repairmen often blamed things like this as the reason for frequent repairs, even though it had nothing to do with it.

That was the beginning of the Urban legend, and it persists to this day.

Namaste,

Any magnetic source will cause discoloration in a TV screen. The motor of your vacuum will produce a magnetic field. If you get close enough it could cause the discoloration. You will need to get the screen degaussed if the color does not come back. So, under the right circumstances of magnetic field size to proximity of the TV, this is true.

Ninja...that is interesting that you would insult her parents...yet your knowledge of electricity is sub-par. An electric motor (such like the one in a vacuum) will produce a magnetic field.

Wow, you have a vaccum that will not only suck dirt off the floor, but will suck the color out of the TV? That's amazing! Maybe you could use it to suck the lack of electrical knowledge out of your parents' minds.

They're thinking of "magnets." A large speaker right next to the TV will do this; a vaccum will not.
