Blu-ray discs hold ALOT more data than HD DVD. When they first came about both formats had official backing from some major movie producers. This format war went on for a while. Eventually HD DVD started losing it's backers to Blu-ray. I think HD DVD is starting to be phased out. So, if I was you I wouldn't buy a HD DVD player or any disks.

HD DVDs are meant to play in an HD DVD player, like the addon for the Xbox 360 or the Toshiba HD DVD players.

For true HD, I think that you may need blu-ray disks.
These are very, very expensive. The PS3 at £450.00 will also be expensive, but it will also be a blu-ray player at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated machine (If you believe the Sony press releases)
