Right click on my computer icon and choose Properties. When properties comes up Click the Computer Name Tab then Change.

The person who is buying the laptop can just rename the user account name, if that is what you're referring to. And he can also change the computer name too. But he may not like all the old data that you have accumulated over the years ;) All the best

I would never, ever sell a laptop that has settings and programs on it (and thus has all kinds of handy information in it for crooks).

At least make it hard on the crooks...reformat the drive and reinstall windows xp. Then he can have whatever name he wants.

If this laptop has any information of yours I would format the drive and have him reinstall XP. This is for your protection. You should never sell a system with your information still on it.

The best way to do that is in the control panel. Go to User Accounts, then select yours and edit the name to his. As far as changing the names of the document folders 'n stuff, it gets a little trickier.

the problem with this type of sale is that the new owner will have access to your private info on that computer. i bet you think you deleted it all? well deleteing it doesn't erase it. it only makes it temporarily unavailable to the average person that doesn't know how to retrieve it.

here is some undelete software

if you want to totally erase it off of the hard drive so that even most of the people that work in the data recovery industry can't view it then you need to use a department of defense disk wiper. it will make up to 7 passes and replace everything on the drive with zeros to make certain it is all gone forever.

Yes there is. (See link from Microsoft Knowledge Base.) It involves going into the Registry, so be careful and make sure you know what you're doing.
