It can be. It depends on which religion you're referring to and how it is being taught. I believe that the original intention of most religions is to promote love. I believe the intention is to teach people to better themselves and to help others. That is the intent of the religion I follow. I am afraid, however, that is not the case with Christianity. The problem with modern Christianity is that instead of welcoming people to the religion, most religious leaders have opted for the "scare the hell out of them" approach. Literally. Unfortunately, the scare tactics used by the church are pushing people away rather than drawing them in. All religions have the potential for good. The problem isn't a god. It is the bonafide super-crazy religious wackos that believe they are carrying out the work of [insert god of your choice here].

I don't think religion is fear. I think that fear is a tool of christianity (as well as some other religions), to recruit believers. Fear is a VERY powerful tool. Many people believe in religion just b/c they are scarred not too, not b/c they really believe in it. The way to concur this fear is to do research for yourself into the facts, or should I say falshoods about religion. This gives you confidence to deny the falsehoods without fear.

It shouldn't be if it is done correctly. Jesus directs all of us to go out and make disciples of all nations which means to spread the good news about what he did for all of mankind on the cross. Parents have this responsibility when it comes to teaching their children about Jesus. Jesus directs us to gently teach others and not to scare or frighten them. If anyone is teaching God's word in a fearful way, he is not doing what God would have him do. While the bogey man can stir feelings of fright, the message of Jesus should bring complete joy. Check it out for yourself in the bible.

Any group or organization that is motivated by fear can be very powerful, but I don't think they last very long. I don't think you can boil religion down to simply "scaring" people into submission, because people wouldn't believe in it. But, when you talk about a relationship that gives peace and hope, that brings about love and mercy...then I think people are compelled to follow, because they want to.

Fear of hell or Love for God?
I opted for the love for God that's why I follow true Christianity now, rather than false teahings of false religions.

No. They told me if I was bad, the ice cream truck guy would steal me away. I was terrified of ice cream men for a while after that. You know, sometimes I wonder how I've turned out semi-sane....

I'm most familiar with Christianity and Christianity certainly uses the carrot and stick approach. God is love, we're told, and if you don't believe it your loving God will torture you for eternity in hell. But if you do believe it and toe the line and do what you're told you might get into heaven. Christians are into their power trips.
