Been there, Done that. Hated braces with a passion. Babe, for the first couple of days, live off of soup and soft things. Mashed potatos, any kind of soup, peas, vegetables are okay if they arent cooked to be crunchy and more so softer, oatmeal, bread, spaghetti, jello, bananas, pudding, soft tacos, and plenty of other things. Take some tylenol or ibuprofin to ease the pain, and Ice Cream certainly helps aswell. If anything they will ache for a few days to a week, and then you'll get used to them. Your teeth arent acustomed to having big metal things tightened by a wire, so they will have to get used to the pressure and weight of the braces. Just think, youll have beautiful teeth when its all done with.

Soup, applesauce, Jello, mashed potatoes. Basically anything soft. And take some aspirin, too. Drinking ice-cold water also helps numb the pain a bit.

They should NOT be that painful - you gotta go back to the dentist and demand a proper fitting appliance. If he tells you that it has to be that way it probably means that he fitted you incorrectly and he doesnt want to spring for the cost of doing it over properly. In any case - you shouldnt be suffering! Dont pay the bill - find another dentist!

Soup, i have braces and you learn to eat alot before and sometimes right after tightening because all you can eat is liquid. Or at least thats true for me, I have pretty sensitive teeth.

Anything soft, but not too chewy is good. I ate tons of icecream and sorbet when I first got mine. It'll stop hurting soon enough though and you'll get real used to them. Obviously you want to avoid anything too hard or crunchy and no gum (that will kill your braces).
