It is a little device that keeps your teapot warm so that the tea stays hot longer. You can get knitted ones, dome-style ones, or those that wrap around the teapot and gather at the top.

Its usually an insulated padded sort of cover that goes over the teapot to keep the tea warm

It is a cover for the teapot to keep the teapot warm. My grandma had a nice collection of them. Some were made of tree bark, woven out of black sheep wool (that was my favorite and she gave it to me when I graduated from high school), sewn, knitted, crocheted. They really do keep the tea in the pot warm.

a tea cosy is a covering for a teapot,for some it was used as a form of insulation or for guarding against burning your hand on the pot,but i think it was just a decorative thing for visitors over for a cuppa
