why dont you call him and ask him what he would like if not make him something and show him its from the heart like cookies or something

What his favorite thing to do... My best guy friend plays the saxophone so I asked him what his favorite kind of reed was. I went and bought him 5, and those suckers are not that cheap. He loved it.

if you're an artist, you could sketch him a cool picture, or burn him a cd of mixed songs that reminds you of him, or frame a picture of you two and give it to him - something simple and thoughtful that kinda shows you're interested
