Canada has fewer freedoms, such as freedom of speech. The debates we have hear about government listening to this or putting pressure on media doesn't exist in Canada. Printing some things are just a crime. Heck, saying some things are just a crime.
Canada has much higher taxes.
Canada's health care system is 'free' (thanks to the high taxes) but overburdened and lacking the high quality specialisists that are in the USA.
Canada doesn't have Florida, California, South Carolina - you know, states with coastlines and a summer to use them during.
Have you tried to watch Canadian football? Helloooo!
And I think most of the Canadians I've encountered have been rude, but I understand they don't much care for Americans either. We'll call that a wash.

I live in the USA but love Canada too. It depends on what you are looking for in a country. Canada has big open spaces, and amazing glaciers. The USA has melted most of its glaciers and has tons more people in bigger cities. The Canadians are often more liberal and more conservative at the same time. We don't "get" them and they don't "get us (I'm not sure I get us at times). The USA has better employment rates and our currency is stronger. However, I love to visit Canada and get the great exchange rate. Banf and Jasper are gorgeous. Eating Chinese in Toronto is like being in Asia. Also, those crazy Canadians have better trade deals than we do. They get all sorts of EU goods that we don't. So, sometimes you can get stuff you can't get here in the good 'ol US of A and speak English (mostly) while doing it. Speaking of language, French Canada is odd (their French is different than France French) but interesting. Montreal and Quebec are amazingly beautiful historic cities that link their history and ours. Visit both the US and Canada thoroughly and come to your own conclusion!

Your question is FAR to general - better for what? at what? need more criteria.
Canada is better for the following reasons:
-- Clean environment - including air and water
-- Better trade - leave our soft would lumber alone USA
-- Free health care - don't need to pay thousands of dollars for doctors bills, surguries, or a visit to the ER
-- Pretty literacy rates
-- Gun Control
-- Gun Registry
-- No white on black violence - We are Multicultural
-- Coastlines - our shipping and fishery industry
-- 4 seasons -- even winter - you can ski, snowboard, etc
-- Celebrities always come up here for vacation, either Whistler or Cottage Country and TONS of movies are made here - because we have the scenery!
-- Bush vs Harper -- enough said

Better for what? Your question is too general. Some enjoy Canada for one reason or another and others enjoy the USA.... so it all depends what it is you're looking for.
However if you a more vibrant and innovative culture I would say USA, even though I live in Canada.
