why can't the sunni's and shites agree on one religion as it pertains to muhammad. second, at what point did each group decide it was better to kill each other than to work it out across the table?

Same reason catholics killed protestants. It's about control, not theology.

Uhhh do you even know what your talking about? It has nothing to do with the Prophet's SAW lineage. It had to do with the Prophet SAW choosing his best companion Abu Bakr to lead the Muslims, but then some other people thought Ali (the Prophets SAW son) was supposedly chosen. Another thing is that the Shi'a are killing the Sunni in Iraq because there was a little bit of tension cause the Sunni were always a minority, and were always backed up by Saddam (also a Sunni). Differences between Sunnis and Shi'a are vast but different. For example, the Shi'a worship Ali's grave and think it will protect them, but we are told that only Allah SWT can protect us. Another difference is temporary marriages. The Shi'a say a Siga'a (temporary marriage) is allowed in Islam, but the rest of us say it is forbidden because it is like prosititution. (Think about it: If a Shi'a wants to get married for only 1 night to have sex and then divorce in the morning, the girl he married wouldnt be a virgin after that one night. And the cycle keeps going and going and going...) So, the conflict in Iraq is based on these differences and also the fact that the Shi'a are trying to kill all the Sunnis. It wasnt always like that but since the U.S. invasion, somehow the American army caused severe tension between Sunnis and Shi'a. Its sad because we are not supposed to fight eachother, but we are.

It's a very complicated thing actually ... they are not killing each other, not since long time ago, but only in Iraq the problem came back. and it's a very very stupid thing to kill at all .. let alone killing your fellow citizen.

There's not even the slightest doubt in every moderate muslim's heart that those who are killing "anybody" will go to hell ... so they are all ignorants and don't even understand Islam in the first place to actually belong to a sect and fight the other one :S

I am a muslim, and i can tell you that the difference between a Sunni and A shite is not worth fighting at ALL.

It's always politics.

the sitation in Iraq is understandable and it has nothing to do with "religion"

regardless of the (minor) religious difference Sunnis and Shiites lived together in peace for centuries.
it wasn't until the invasion of Iraq when hell broke loose. at first, the Iraqis rejoiced when the US military over thrown the Ba'th regime of Saddam Hussein.

now we have the Iraqi people (Sunnis and Shiites) and Al Qaida (foreign fighters from all over the Mideast and mostly Sunnis) in Iraq right.
Al Qaida in Iraq are committed to fight the Americans in Iraq to the bitter end until we either get out or get killed. that's how they think.

after the first few months the majority of the Iraqis who "rejoiced" when Saddam was caught, started to get tired of the US occupation and the militias started to grow.
in the beginning there was no fighting between Shiites and Sunnis at all. all the fighting was basically against the US and UK. Sunni Iraqis who wanted to get involved in this joined Al Qaida (foreign Arabs) and Shiites Iraqis joined Al Mahdi Army in Baghdad's Sadr city.
now this Mahdi militia was showing our troops hell until the US Army had to make a truce with their leader Muqtada Al Sadr and promised him that the new regime will be controlled by Shiites instead Sunnis who ruled Iraq for many many years under Saddam's regime.

Sunnis see this as treason and therefore justify killing the "traitors". they started bombing Shiite neighborhoods, mosques, and markets.
bottom line is our military is some what responsible for all the sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shiites.

in my opinion both Shiites and Sunnis who do kill innocent people for no reason other than being Sunni or Shiites (civilians) are vicious animals and don't deserve to breath.
unfortunately the civil war has erupted and there's nothing we can do to stop it.

I know; they're so immature. We need to unite and better ourselves instead of killing each other. What an embarrassment . I watched a funny Yoda video and one guy (in a British accent) sums it all up quite well "Shut up u bickering b*astards!" lmao but then again, every1 has their problems, right??
