Wish to remove so wood can be sanded and refinished. Significant amounts of tenacious asphalt impregnated material(felt?)as well as the tile and vinyl need to be removed and disposed of

If those tile were put down before the mid 1970's, there's a chance they're asbestos backed. So, be careful and check local regulations on removal. Otherwise, a heat gun and a good scraper will take them up. Sounds like a lot of work, but hardwood floors are beautiful and worth the effort.

larry, stop! it sounds like linoleum on the bottom layer. back when they did that type of installation i could have had asbestos in it. check to be safe. next, if it was done with tar and tar paper, tar will be between the cracks(seams) of the wood. get some quotes from a hardwood flooring person first. you might find the only way to get the hardwood floor that you are looking for is to rip out everything down to the sub floor. this could be more costly than you are planning. by the way, when we did this i found out why the wood floor was covered in the first place. i am guessing it is a kitchen, they get a lot of wear and tear and water spots. just to be for warned. good luck, and happy holidays!

a big floor scraper at the Home Depot is the best bet, then sand with a floor sander. Be sure to wear a face mask though and don't breath without one.
